West Syrian Resources

)_$=res

There are a number of web-sites offering computing resources to the Syriac-using community, but these are overwhelmingly concentrated in the East Syrian and Chaldean ('Nestorian') dialects.

In an attempt to (at least partly) redress the balance we offer here a true-type font called 'Serto' and links to software that will enable its use. We would be interested in hearing from any Mac users out there who are able to convert the files for use on their machines.

If your browser supports Cascading Style Sheets, you will see a sample of Serto at the bottom of this page.

You can download the Serto package (you will require a utility such as Winzip to extract the files).

You may read the installation and copyright files before downloading the package if you wish (but they are both included).

In order to get the best from the font you will need to download the freeware utility RTL for Windows 95 from Tomas Frydrych's site. His site also contains our package in a self-extracting zip format, along with modules for East and Modern Syriac Hebrew and Arabic. RTL allows short passages of Semitic languages (right-to-left) to be inserted into any Windows word-processing or text-editing (left-to-right) programs. Tomas' site also has a very early development version of ScriptPad, a right-to-left AND left-to-right word processor. The packages all work with RTL and ScriptPad because they use the rendering engine built and maintained by the Summer Institute of Linguistics (q.v.).

This page and the Serto package built and maintained by Derek Achen.
